Appropriate Technology Centre, Sundernagar has been established by the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science Technology and Environment, at Govt. Polytechnic College, Sundernagar under the MoU between Department of Technical Education, H.P. and Himachal Pradesh Council for Science Technology and Environment, during 1995. An Appropriate Technology Research, Development & Promotion Centre was set up at Govt. Polytechnic Sundernagar in 1995 where an extension centre was functioning since 1989.

Appropriate Technology Centre, Sundernagar has been disseminating the technologies for rural as well as urban development, ever since, its establishment by the State Council in the State. Appropriate Technology Centre has successfully propagated a number of Appropriate Technologies in the State namely; improved water mills (Gharat), LDPE Pond, Hand Maize Sheller, Low Cost Greenhouses, Passive Solar, Earthquake Resistant Housing Technologies, rainwater harvesting through Ferro-cement and LDPE lined Ponds technologies, Waste water recycling, biomass conversion into energy, Agriculture implements, Room Heating Bhukari etc.
